Our Story
The ensemble were formed in 2014 by their musical director, Alastair Taylor, to perform the winning entry of the Cornwall International Male Choral Festival composer’s competition. From that moment on the ensemble acquired the singing ‘bug’ and haven’t looked back since. The group perform a wide range of music including pop and rock classics, songs from the shows, folk, traditional choral and big band swing.
The ensemble have performed all over the County including the magnificent Minack theatre at Porthcurno plus several appearances at Truro cathedral, including one performance where they sang with internationally renowned tenor John Trelevan.
Despite the relative infancy of the choir they have achieved considerable success in several competitions including the Edgar Kessell Gold Cup for best overall choir in the County Music Festival at the first attempt. The choir has twice won at the Camborne Music Festival including special awards for best overall choir, highest mark and best performance at the festival. At the 2019 International Male Choral Festival, held in Truro cathedral, the choir were the best UK choir in their category and the best Cornish choir overall which was then exceeded at the same festival in 2022 when they won 4 trophies including best UK overall and best Cornish choir in the Festival.

Bass
Martin Baglow
Raised in a village of song, Martin started singing at Sunday school, later following both his founder-member grandfather and father into the celebrated Treviscoe Male Voice choir. He was the perfect fit for the role of the bumbling Sergeant of Police in his University’s production of The Pirates of Penzance, and moved seamlessly from that into a 30 year police career, serving 22 years as a Detective. For 34 years he was a member of the Great Western Chorus, its Octet and several quartets, performing in the Barbershop style all over the UK, Europe and the USA. Martin is the proud father of Jon and Laura (both grown and flown) and lives overlooking Mevagissey harbour with his wife Lynne who also sings with Lowenna voices.  He now works as a Primary School Teaching Assistant and leads the school choir.

Bass
Nick Dent
Nick joined the Celtics in Autumn 2022 having not sung for over 40 years. He started singing in his local church choir aged 6 and when aged 8 he won a choral scholarship to Truro Cathedral choir, leaving as Head Chorister when his voice broke. As well as singing Nick’s voice can be heard over the West Cornwall airwaves as he is a local radio presenter with Penzance based Coast FM. Beyond singing and broadcasting Nick can be found road cycling or out on is sea kayak – whilst learning his notes of course.

Bass
Adam Nicholls
Adam has been a keen member of the Celtics since their infancy. He has performed many lead roles within local theatre, in multiple locations, including the prestigious Minack theatre. Â Adam was a member of Redruth Operatic singers for many years and enjoyed touring throughout the UK and has also been a principal judge for local competitions, such as the young farmers cabaret at the Hall for Cornwall. Married with 2 young children and working as a Management Surveyor for a firm specialising in Energy improvements keeps Adam very busy.

Bass
Andy Bennett
Andy was brought up in Falmouth and has never been far away from a boat ever since. After too long away, he has returned to Cornwall to live in Gweek with his partner Zoe. Working as a naval architect still takes him away occasionally but mostly to be found in his office in Falmouth with his spaniel, Ben, under the desk. (The dog is under the desk, not him). Most of his spare time is spent sailing or maintaining a wooden boat. However there is also some time spent harassing the locals in the pub playing his fiddle in the regular folk sessions. Recently joining the CME is the first experience of singing in a choir, which is a new challenge for all concerned.

Bass
Damon Taylor
Damon has been in various societies over the years performing in shows all over Cornwall in venues from schools, to theatres, churches as well as the Hall for Cornwall and The Minack. Some memorable roles include: Roger De Bris - The Producers; Sir Percy Blakeney - The Scarlet Pimpernel; Rene Artois - 'Allo 'Allo;Â Â Bruce Ismay - Titanic The Musical; Buffalo Bill Cody - Annie Get Your Gun; Caiaphas - Jesus Christ Superstar; Harold - The Full Monty... add in a few panto dames and villains under his belt and many more roles, he has established himself in the theatre world. Damon loves spending time with his family, particularly his children Ethan, Jayden, Ellie, Arwen and Harrison.

Bass
Nick Vale
I always said I was an actor who could sing(ish) essentially I could act well enough that most people didn't mind the singing. Being told I am true bass gave me no joy…there are no great parts down there in your boots. Curse my big deep voice. Then I was fortunate enough to experience The Kings singers. I saw (heard) first hand what a true bass can do and how delicious, rich and crucial that sound is in a choir. Not only did I embrace my voice but I was so happy I could rumble down there with the best of them. Singing is the greatest cure to our daily challenges and to be fortunate enough sing among such talented guys is a privilege. Thank you to them and to anyone who takes the time to listen to us.

Baritone
Paul Mead
Paul is an Englishman but he has a ‘Trura Gramfer’ who was born in Agar road so the Celtics don’t hold it against him. Paul first sang for audiences in the pubs of Co. Kerry and the Aran Isles Co. Galway and tried unsuccessfully to accompany himself but was amicably advised that he had ‘Stupid fingers.’  Undaunted he joined The Redruth Operatic Society and found the joy of rehearsals, performing and also a wife. A Celtics founder member Paul has seen the choir evolve and adds ‘it’s all down to our MD, Alastair Taylor’

Baritone
Leigh Hooper
Leigh joined the choir in September 2021 after a stint with the Redruth Operatic singers. He has always been an avid sportsman and played rugby for many years.  He has now turned to more genteel pursuits such as golf and singing. Leigh is currently working in assembly in the aerospace industry after spending 27 in printing.  His son Nathan is also an accomplished performer and often plays lead roles in local theatre productions. Leigh says he is ‘proud to a ‘Celtic’ and perform with such a fantastic group.’

Baritone
Nick Stevens
Nick is from a true Cornish family line and lives in Carbis Bay, next door to St Ives, where he works as a self-employed plumber. A few years ago he began singing with the Cape Cornwall singers, who are based in St Just, and they perform a large range of Cornish and Shanty songs with Nick becoming a leading member of the group. After a few years also singing with Marazion Apollo male choir Nick was introduced to Celtics in 2022 and enjoys the variety of his singing throughout Cornwall.

Baritone
James Trevaskis
James’s musical journey started at a young age learning to play the baritone and then he found his love for the bass trombone. He went on to have great success in the Cornwall Youth Band and the National Youth Band of Great Britain. His musical career started in the Band of the Grenadier Guards where he travelled the world touring and performing with some outstanding musicians.  Having spent twenty two successful years in the Army he decided to have a career change into classroom teaching. James embarked on a GTP course at Canterbury University and his first school was in Tunbridge Wells. The pull back to Cornwall was strong and now he is the Head of Music at Camborne International Science Academy. This is where he met Alistair Taylor who invited him to audition for the Celtic Male Ensemble. Besides playing singing and teaching, James enjoys walking around the Cornish coastline.

Baritone
Ian McKelvey
Ian's Celtic credentials come from Irish parents and ancestry, though he was raised in Cornwall. At school he represented Redruth, Cornwall and England at rugby and went on to play for Truro and London Irish. Having been bribed to sing with the Light Opera Society at Medical School he met his wife Sarah in a production of Ruddigore, the story of their meeting he later submitted to Classic FM and won an trip for them both to see Tosca in Vienna. Ian has 4 children and worked as a GP partner and trainer in North Cornwall for over 20 years. Multiple joint replacements led to him retiring early but during the period of reduced mobility he learnt several languages and passed Grade 7 on the piano with his first ever Distinction! His black labrador Pedro keeps him mobile now and he manages to maintain  a reasonable handicap at St Enodoc Golf Club. He enjoyed singing with Wadebridge MVC for 5 years and feels he has now 'graduated' to the CME.

Baritone
Harry Lewis
At school, Harry was an integral part of the choir, working his way through the various sections as he got older. He formed a band at University as a lead singer, but since then his music career had stalled, only to be resurrected by the Celtic Male Ensemble. His family come from both North and South Cornwall, whilst he lives with his wife, daughter and son bridging the gap in Truro. Harry is proud to be part of the Celtic Male Ensemble and a part of a team again, and continuing his passion of singing.

Top Tenor
Ben Hoadley
Ben started his singing in 1998 with coach, Bob Bowman, in Penzance and has since performed regularly in festivals, oratorios and gala performances. Ben has sung with Duchy Opera in numerous country house concerts, is a current member of Intimate Opera and has also been a guest soloist with Marazion Apollo, Mousehole, Newquay and Four Lanes Male Voice choirs as well as being a regular tenor soloist for Penzance Choral Society for many years. As well as being a vocal coach and leading a school choir Ben plays and teaches the cello and has recorded his own CD. Ben is proud to be a founder member of the ‘Celtics’.

Top Tenor
Adrian Rashleigh
Born and raised overlooking St Ives harbour Adrian’s Cornish roots can be traced back through many generations. Currently running his bed and breakfast in Carbis Bay, there is always time for singing and especially socialising. A ‘Celtic’ since 2017 he was a relative late starter on the singing/performing front but has been in several local choirs and shows, with various societies, over the last 15 years. With three ‘grown and flown’ children it is left to Adrian’s ‘better half’, Suzanne, to play the supporting role and thankfully she loves being a ‘Celtic groupie’ and often supports the choir.

Top Tenor
Liam Chamberlain
Liam starting singing at a young age as a chorister in a variety of choirs in his home county of Leicestershire. His passion for male voice ensembles was sparked here in Cornwall after watching his grandfather sing with St. Stithians MVC and as soon as he became a tenor, he joined Wigston & District MVC and also formed a barbershop quartet to enjoy a different style of male voice harmony. Liam has just moved back to Cornwall with his family, and after a gap from singing whilst in London he is delighted to be singing with CME. Liam is food mad and, if not singing, he will often be found in the kitchen or at the BBQ cooking with friends and family. He loves hanging out on the beach and surfing with his wife and 2 daughters. I couldn't be happier to be singing with such an incredible choir.

Top Tenor
Tim McAuliffe
Tim started singing in choirs in Junior school and this transfed though to Secondary school. As a teenager Tim performed with many musical theatre companies including Young Generation and Falmouth Theatre Company, where he has been lucky enough to play many roles over the years including dramatic and comedic parts. He has always had a passion for singing. More recently Tim produced and directed  Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for Falmouth Theatre Company alongside his wife. Tim is thrilled to be part of The  Celtic Male Ensemble and continuing his love for singing.

Top Tenor
Liam Shoesmith
Liam has been singing for as long as he can remember. Starting in gospel choirs and rock bands, and eventually exploring opera, oratorio, and musical theatre. Over the years, he had the joy of performing at a range of events, big and small, and took singing lessons for around 15 years to keep growing as a vocalist. Liam plays classical guitar and have studied drama. Alongside music, he works as a horticulturalist, which is another lifelong passion. Liam has spent a lot of time creating media around gardening and wildlife, and is lucky to be a regular guest on Radio Cornwall and Devon, answering listeners’ gardening questions. He also travels around the county giving talks and sharing what he has learned. Whether on stage or in the garden, Liam loves connecting with people—through music, nature, and conversation—and he is always learning something new along the way.

Second Tenor
Gavin Poole
Gavin’s singing life started with a solo role in a production of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’. In his teenage years Gavin took the baritone role in Faure’s Requiem, alongside musical director Gillian Didben, who went on to win national and international prizes in the competition ‘Let the People Sing’. Gavin’s musical career took him to a choral role at King’s College in London and whilst other pressures led him away from music he always stayed in touch through liquid, washing up, communion wine and pubs. After this break Gavin is now delighted to have found a home with the ‘Celtics’.

Second Tenor
Glen Graham
Glen lives in Redruth and works at Camborne school as a music teacher. He originally joined the choir in 2015 as a bass later moving to the baritones and now sings as a second tenor. He enjoys cycling, gardening and watching French films. Chairman of the choir, Glen has an ambition to, one day, sing top tenor, emulating his lifelong idol and secret crush, Ben Hoadley.

Second Tenor
James Peterson
James is from a St Ives family and has worked locally as a self-employed painter and decorator since leaving school. In his twenties James joined Redruth Operatic society as a choir member and also a performer in many shows including Barnum, Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph. Joining Celtics in 2019 the competition highlights for James were the two Cornwall International Male Choral Festivals held in Truro Cathedral in 2019 and 2022 and his favourite performance venue has been The Minack theatre.

Second Tenor
Nigel Stevens
Nigel, born in St Ives on the afternoon that England won the World Cup! Grew up in a family that loved to sing and perform, with Mother and Father actively involved with St Ives Operatic Society and Moushole Male Voice Choir. On leaving school he trained as a Farrier and runs a small practice shoeing horses in West Cornwall. (Known by some as the singing Blacksmith!!) Nigel joined Celtic in March 2023 A member of various church choirs and music groups over the years, at present  a member of Cape Cornwall Singers and St Ives Cornish Carol Choir. Living in Carbis Bay with his wife Sharon (also a keen singer) who has been very supportive in his singing exploits, past and present. They have two Daughters,  Kat and Naomi and Son Joel, who are intrigued by this new phase in their Father's life!

Second Tenor
Geoff Cann
Between the age of seven and leaving for university, Geoff was in a large church choir with whom he’d been on TV, recorded an album and sung at numerous cathedrals. His musical ‘career’ then stalled, only to be revived by recently joining the Celtics. His family come from North Cornwall but he is now more likely to be found swinging his clubs on the links at Lelant or walking his dog on the promenade at Penzance …. humming!

Second Tenor
Andy Christophers
Andy was born the 5th of 6 sons, known affectionately in the village of Mawnan Smith as Jean, John and boys. Growing up in a busy house with a poorly locking bathroom door it was important to be able to sing loudly or at least whistle. Following in their father's footsteps, dad and boys were the heart of Mawnan Church choir for many years and also inherited the Male Voice Choir bug. Andy's love of singing and performing lead him into over 50 years of Male Voice and Mixed Voice choirs, solo entertaining and a vast list of credits in stage Musicals, Pantomime and Opera. He is proud to add Chairman and Deputy MD of St Stythians Male Voice Choir to his CV and says it is a huge honour and privilege to be a part of the Celtics where he can simply enjoy his singing while others do the organising.
